Kadha : A Traditional Ayurvedic Herbal Tea

What is Kadha Tea?

Kadha' is an ayurvedic tea made with a number of herbs and spices that are boiled in water to extract their benefits. In Indian subcontinent when someone has a cold, flu, infection, sore throat, fever or body ache their mother’s or grandmother’s make “Kadha” tea at home.

What are the ingredients of Kadha Tea:

Commonly used ingredients in Kadha tea are Giloy, Liquorice, Ginger, Tulsi, Cinnamon and Black Pepper.

What are the benefits of these ingredients?

Giloy also known as “Amrita is one of the most commonly prescribed herbs in Ayurveda. It possesses strong antioxidant properties and is considered to remove toxins from the body, purify the blood and fight bacteria. It is an antipyretic in nature, which means it can reduce fever and body aches.

Liquorice root is also considered to be a potent antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, and it has  antimicrobial effects. Several research studies have suggested that it may ease upper respiratory infections and can relief cough and cold.

Ginger root is traditionally used in Ayurveda to help fight the flu and common cold. Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger. Modern science has demonstrated, in number of studies, ginger’s powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Tulsi, commonly known as holy basil, is traditionally used in Ayurveda as an expectorant; it relieves irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth by forming a protective film. Tulsi helps to relieve cough, respiratory catarrh and colds.

Black pepper  is one of the most commonly used spices worldwide. It has been considered the “king of spices” and has been used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s commonly prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners for treating sore throat due to flu, viral or pollution.

Cinnamon is the dried inner bark of a tree and is one of the oldest known spices in the world. Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants. It enhances taste of a product, and has cold and flu fighting properties.
