Why Take Shilajit?

Shilajit is a black tarry resin derived from decay of ancient plants that lived many millions of years ago. These plants grew in an era where the soils were rich in many minerals, including trace minerals such as zinc, copper, chromium, manganese, and others. These minerals are found along with Fulvic Acid and Humic Acids from the plants and are better absorbed than the regular trace minerals found in sea salt etc. This can be beneficial for people with stomach issues leading to low stomach acid production that occurs over time, with use of various acid inhibiting drugs, surgery, etc.

Most people today are deficient in trace minerals because most commercial farming operations do not add trace minerals to their soils. Only Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and potassium are needed to turn plants green so only these things are added to soil fertilizers.  Benefits of Shilajit include increase in energy, mood, concentration, sleep, cognition, improvement in central obesity, weight, improvement in blood sugar, blood pressure, stamina, libido, among other
things. It works by decreasing cortisol levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and increasing testosterone levels.  Avoid taking impure or adulterated or raw Shilajit as it can contain toxic heavy metals, free radicals, fungus, and other contaminants. It can lead to gout in some patients.

Best to take about 250-500 mg per day in divided doses 2-3 times a day on empty stomach dissolved in either hot milk, Ghee, sesame oil, raw honey, coconut oil, herbal tea, or water. It can take up to a week to notice the benefits of this supplement. This should be used in people more than 12
years of age as no studies in younger kids have been published to date.  Shilajit should not be used or used with caution in patients with various red blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia, hemoglobinopathies, hemochromatosis, thalassemia traits etc. Reason being, Shilajit also contains iron which can build up more easily in these patients and this can damage a person’s
health with long term usage.  It is best to take shilajit along with ashwaganda, rhodiola, holy basil, schisandra, or other adaptogenic herbs that have the ability to reduce cortisol levels which can improve mood, decrease
anxiety, improve energy and sleep, etc. A good, purified, correctly dosed and Health Canada licensed product is Dr. Kohli's Shilajit. https://drkohli.ca/products/shilajit-capsules?_pos=1&_sid=17707d94b&_ss=r
